This chapter has two central aims. The first is the description of the
phase diagram and quantum phase transitions of a class of S = 1/2
antiferromagnets in d = 1 with antiferromagnetic first and second
neighbor exchange: the results are interpreted in the context of the general
discussion of antiferromagnets in Chapter 13.
The second is the introduction of the technical tool of bosonization, and
an illustratation its utility in the solutions of the d = 1 antiferromagnets.
